Few thinkers have had such an influence on the contemporary Islamic thought as ash-shaheed Sayyid Qutb. Since his execution in 1964 in Cairo, his death became the perfect illustration of one of the processes through which a human being becomes part of the revolutionary movement aimed at changing the world and bringing in a new ethical moral order based on freedom, brotherhood, and justice for all. Islam stands for change. It seeks to change the individual and the society. This change covers every aspect of human life: form personal morality to business economics and politics. It is only natural that Islam should be fought by those who want to keep the status quo. This is the way it has always been throughout history: Adam to Nuh, Ibrahrim, Musa, Isa, and Muahmmad (peace be upon them). It will happen to anyone who wants to stand up and proclaim the true message of Islam to the world. |

Recently, a debate between our religiously committed brothers haserupted on the Internet regarding the permissibility of participatingin democratic elections in the West. An article entitled “To Vote orNot to Vote” and another entitled “Why Vote, and Who to Vote For?” inparticular have raised several points, which we feel are necessary toaddress as well as certain others related to Democracy andparticipation in the electoral process in general. In this shortaddress, we will attempt to offer some clarification on the issue withthe hope of refuting some claims and correcting some errors of theauthors of these articles as well as addressing some of the more commonmistakes related to this topic overall. In approaching the topic ofMuslims participating in democratic elections, certain introductorypoints must be made. It is our intention to be very brief in thesepoints as to avoid dwelling upon them and we only mention them forlater reference in discussing the core issue of dispute regarding thepermissibility of participating in the democratic elections.

By Imam Hassan Al Banna. From Introduction, 'The most dangerous periodin the life of a nation, and the most deserving of critical study, isthe period of transition from one situation to another. It is then thatplans for the new period are laid and its guiding principles andpolicies are drawn up, according to which, the nation will be formedand to which it will adhere. If these plans, principles, and oliciesare clear cut, sound, and solid, then announce for this nation of along and extended life, of prosperous and flourishing work. Inform themof success and give them glad tidings of a great reward, eternal fame, the just verdict of history, and a good reputation.' |

In this era in which the Muslims are living a life of humiliation anddisgrace, they have lost the characteristics of guidance from withinthemselves, and the Rope of Allah that He united them upon – the Ropeof establishment and leadership - has been cut, so they have becomeinsignificant in front of themselves and in front of their enemies.Falsehood prances around in their countries, and the trend of apostasyhas become the strongest and the most dominant. And the ties of evilbetween [the people of] internal apostasy and [those of] outward Kufrhave been fortified. The Muslims have become busy with entertainmentand vanity, and the Islamic parties and groups summon one another tothe ideas of men and their Ijtihad, far away from the Source ofGuidance and Light – the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. And the [state] of Ghurbah (estrangement) has intensified for those whoare holding fast to this Guidance, and their souls long for the comingDivine Promise. |
